KAMBODSCHAS GROSSES WASSER - UNTERWEGS AUF DEM TONLE SAP
WHERE THE FISH SLEEP IN THE TREES - LIFE ON CAMBODIA´S TONLE SAP
Documentary feature for the ARD series “Countries, People, Adventure.”
Produced by T & G Films, Berlin.

During the rainy season (May to October) the Tonle Sap River – a tributary of the Mekong - reverses its flow and inundates large parts of Cambodia. The Tonle Sap lake quadruples in size to become South East Asia’s largest inland water mass. Up to a third of the country disappears under water. Water levels rise by up to 8m. The fishing season begins, providing Cambodians with up to 70% of their protein intake. For thousands of people, the floodwaters impose a life “upon water” -
in boats, floating houses or in huts on stilts.

The film follows two main protagonists:

Sokha , widow and captain of the Vathanak Sambath, a 38m cargo vessel ferrying goods between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap

and Oehn , former crocodile hunter and poacher, now warden at the Prek Toal Osmose Biosphere Project
They, together with others, reveal the undaunted spirit and way of life of the Water People of Tonle Sap.

A way of life that is under ever-increasing threat from corruption, nepotism, over-fishing and the planned construction of more than 20 dams along the Mekong River.
